What are the most current macOS qualifications for Avid Media Composer?

Many Avid products run on Macs, including our Creative Tools family (Pro Tools, Media Composer, Sibelius, and others). Avid continuously works to support macOS as well as Windows.  For macOS 11.x “Big Sur”, macOS 12.x “Monterey”, and the new Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max), our teams have been hard at work.  Below is a list of Avid products and their various qualifications with Apple’s OS and hardware thus far.

In the meantime, we recommend that you continue to use previously qualified operating systems until you see changes listed below. This article will be updated as changes in qualification status are made. (For the latest information on macOS Catalina support, please visit this knowledge base article).

* Designates Apple Silicon (M1) support via Rosetta 2. Note that Rosetta 2 can sometimes operate using up to 1GB of RAM, which can affect performance on machines with a low amount of RAM installed. As with all computers, Avid products function better with higher amounts of RAM installed. Users who have the ability to max-out the RAM are usually happiest with the resulting performance.

** Dongles are sometimes initially not recognized on Big Sur machines running Media Composer 2020.12 or later. We have a good workaround for this here: Media Composer dongle not recognized on macOS BigSur.

*** Dongles will neither work on Apple silicon (M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max) nor on macOS Monterey.

**** Regarding Teradici access to Edit on Demand: Te PCoIP Mobile Client 3.6.2 for iOS Tablets does not support iOS 14.5 or higher. Teradici is working on this, and expects to provide an updated iOS client soon.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Media Composer and M1 notes:
  • Media Composer 2021.12 is the first version approved for Apple silicon (M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max).
  • Dongles will not work on any Apple silicon-based computers. More info [here].
Pro Tools Big Sur notes:
  • Our testing has shown that certain configurations may result in a higher incidence of playback errors. This is particularly prevalent with legacy MacBook Pros.
  • Before updating, check to see if your We advise waiting until your third-party plugins and other programs are officially supported before updating to a on a new OS.
  • Please see Avid HD Driver Installation on macOS for best practices
  • Users may experience graphical issues when scrolling
Pro Tools Apple M1 notes:
  • Please see the Carbon section of the Pro Tools ReadMe for known Big Sur issues
  • Apple M1 machines can kernel panic if an HDX chassis is disconnected while the computer is on or the computer is put to sleep. To disconnect an HDX chassis safely, the computer must be powered down.
Pro Tools System Usage CPU count on M1 Macs
  • Due to the innovative combination of Performance cores & High Efficiency cores in M1 machines, the Pro Tools Hardware Monitor will only display 4 CPUs as the majority of the processing needs to be accomplished in the Performance domain.
